Are Fenix and Talandar the same person?
Scope: StarCraft, Brood War, Legacy of the Void and the 2020 short story One People, One Purpose. Co-op material is identified separately.
Spoilers Fenix’s death and Talandar’s late-campaign identity decision; brief discussion of the postwar story.
Fenix and Talandar share more than a face on a commander screen. The Purifier speaks to Artanis with an old friend's familiarity and begins by believing he is that friend. Yet Legacy of the Void lets him choose a different name.
Talandar is a separate Purifier built from Fenix's copied personality, not the original warrior restored to life. That settles his origin. It does not make everything he feels or does a counterfeit. The campaign separates those questions, and its later fiction keeps the distinction alive.

The dragoon is the misleading comparison
Fenix had already returned in a mechanical body in the original StarCraft. His ruined organic body was recovered and placed inside a dragoon. He continued fighting, then died during Kerrigan's betrayal in Brood War. That is the loss behind Raynor's anger at Kerrigan.
The conversation after the Glacius mission describes a different process. Karax identifies the Purifier prototype's personality as a copy of Fenix's. The awakened warrior believes he has been made into a dragoon; his own explanation is part of the misunderstanding, not independent confirmation that he survived.
A mechanical exterior cannot tell us which process occurred. One body sustained the original Fenix. The other was built around a replica of his personality. Treating both as another resurrection skips the very distinction that troubles Artanis.
Why “just a copy” misses his decision
There is a difference between asking whether this is the same individual and asking whether he can form a relationship of his own.
The late-campaign naming conversation puts that difference into the friendship. Before choosing Talandar, the Purifier explains that he now knows Artanis through shared experience as well as memory. He asks for a new name without asking to end that friendship. Artanis accepts.
The scene supports a narrower, more useful reading than either “Fenix never really died” or “none of this friendship counts.” Inherited memories brought this warrior to Artanis; their time together gave him something that belonged to his own life. Choosing a name recognizes that life instead of erasing the older one.
That is an interpretation of the scene, not a claim that Blizzard has settled every philosophical test of personal identity. The character's decision is clearer than that larger debate: he wants to be known as Talandar.
The co-op name does not reverse the campaign

Blizzard's Fenix commander preview uses the familiar name while explicitly describing stored heroic personalities and transferable artificial intelligence. Its robotic suits are a way to express that design in co-op.
The label therefore cannot establish the original Fenix's survival. The same source calls the commander a Purifier. Nor does a gameplay mechanic by itself overwrite the campaign's conversation about who that Purifier has become.
A life after the borrowed name
The official story One People, One Purpose follows Talandar after the war. Fenix's memories remain part of him, while his chosen name and discovered purpose ground his life. He also encounters the distance other protoss keep from Purifiers.
The distinction survives beyond the naming scene. Talandar has a future the original Fenix never lived. The story can preserve a dead hero's loss while allowing someone shaped by his memories to become more than his replacement.
