Are Narud and Duran the same being? Where the game confirms it
Scope: Legacy of the Void prologue and epilogue; official Creative Development Q&A Part 9.
Spoilers Reveals Narud’s identity, his return in the Void, and his confrontation with Stukov.
Dr. Narud and Samir Duran are the same being. The released campaign does more than leave a clue in their names: Zeratul explicitly connects them in the Whispers of Oblivion prologue to Legacy of the Void. Stukov later addresses Narud as Duran in the epilogue.
The useful question is therefore where the game confirms the identity. Asking when Narud “became” Duran would assume a transformation that those scenes are not describing. A revelation to the audience is not necessarily a new event in a character’s life.

Start with Zeratul’s search
In the opening cinematic, Zeratul is looking for the place where Amon was reborn. He identifies the being who knew its location by both names: Samir Duran and Narud. The English game subtitle makes the connection directly, and the Korean version does too.
That is stronger evidence than spelling. Reverse Narud and you get Duran, a memorable reason to suspect a connection. But a reversed name alone cannot establish what a story considers true. Here, the campaign supplies the missing step: a character explicitly identifies one being under both names.
This also changes how to read an old discussion. A theory can have been unresolved when someone wrote it without remaining unresolved after later material. For the present question, the prologue gives a direct answer; the word puzzle is no longer carrying the argument.
A second scene makes it personal
In the epilogue mission Into the Void, Stukov confronts Narud and calls him Duran. Narud recognizes Stukov in return. Where Zeratul provided information for a search, this exchange makes the connection part of a confrontation between people who know one another.

Narud’s appearance there also needs a distinction of its own. He explains that xel’naga return to the Void when they lose their physical forms. The scene distinguishes the destruction of a body from the end of the being that occupied it. Treating his return as an ordinary human doctor coming back to life would miss the explanation the encounter itself provides.
These two scenes answer related but separate questions: who Narud is, and why losing a physical form need not have ended his existence. One answer should not be used as a substitute for the other.
Knowing the answer does not put it in Raynor’s head
There is another tempting shortcut: if Narud is Duran, why did Raynor trust him? That question needs evidence about Raynor’s knowledge, rather than just evidence about Narud’s identity.
Blizzard’s Creative Development Q&A Part 9 says Raynor was likely suspicious of Narud and his research, but chose to follow the plan because it offered hope of saving Kerrigan. The answer explains a choice made despite doubts. It does not establish that Raynor knew Narud was Duran.
That difference matters when judging the decision. Suspicion of a researcher is not complete knowledge of who he is. Nor does accepting a plan mean having no reservations about its source. The writer’s answer leaves room for both doubt and commitment, without requiring Raynor to possess everything the player learns later.
For another scene in which a familiar appearance can mislead, see who was speaking through Tassadar’s form. Recognizing a face and identifying a being are different steps in that encounter, too.
